About Makaton

The Makaton Language Programme offers a proven approach for the teaching of communication and language skills to children and adults who have a broad range of communication needs. 

This unique programme combines speech with manual signs and also graphic symbols. Gesturing is observed in all developing infants as a pre-lingual skill, so by teaching signing (gestures with a particular meaning) you are making the most of the normal pattern of speech and language development.

Makaton is used extensively in homes, care settings, schools and by Mr Tumble on the CBBC programme ‘Something Special’.

About Makaton Training

There is a variety of Makaton Workshops that cover a whole host of circumstances from signing with babies to developing the language skills of children and adults who use Makaton as their primary form of communication. See the Workshops page for more details of individual courses.

For individuals wishing to learn Makaton, I run courses each term at KIDS in Fareham, Hampshire.
