Beginners Workshop

Who can Attend?

The Makaton Beginners Workshop is an introductory course for parents, carers, support workers and professionals who need to use Makaton at home and in their work and assumes no prior knowledge of Makaton.

What do I Learn?

Signing instruction is given for Stages 1-4 plus the Additional Stage of the Makaton Core Vocabulary to help in practical situations. Makaton symbols are included and examples of their use are given. The training contains many practical exercises and emphasises establishing basic communication with the child.

Total teaching time for the Beginners Workshop is 12 hours. This may be split into 2, six hour whole days, or 4 modules of three hours, or as suits the provider. Modules are generally taught weekly, but Makaton training is designed to be flexible and can easily be tailored to individual needs.

An additional advantage of the Beginners Workshop is that learners can attend the first day (modules 1&2) as a stand alone course and receive a certificate of attendance. There would, of course, be the option of attending the second day (modules 3&4) at a later date.

At KIDS, Beginners Workshops are offered as two separate courses. That is one day’s training with the freedom to choose whether to attend the second day. See Course Dates

Following completion of the Beginners Workshop you may wish to consider attending the Follow Up Workshop
