What qualifications do you have? The Makaton Charity does not insist on any particular teaching qualification prior to the tutor training. However, before the licence to practise is awarded, Tutors’ skills in delivering the theory material and teaching the signs are thoroughly tested. During the Tutor Training Course trainees’ skills are evaluated by The Makaton Charity’s National Training Officer. These skills are subsequently appraised independently by an experienced Makaton Tutor, when the trainee tutor has a chance to contribute in a live Workshop as part of the assessment process. It is only after both of these assessments have been completed satisfactorily that the licence to practise is granted. In terms of my own professional development:
- I completed the Certificate in Education at the University of Portsmouth in the summer of 2005
- I have City & Guilds Key Skills Qualifications at Level 3 in Application of Number (numeracy), Communication (literacy) and ICT.
- I have also studied British Sign Language and LipReading.
How do we know your training is up to date? Makaton Training can only be delivered by Tutors licensed by The Makaton Charity. Licences are issued annually and a requirement of the licence is that Tutors attend Study Days provided by The Makaton Charity which include skill revision.
Do you have any references we can see? All the remarks on the About Me page and the Comments Page are from genuine learners. I also have College Tutors’ assessments from a number of Teaching Practice Observations connected with my Certificate in Education, teaching qualification. If you wish to see these please contact me
You say that you qualified in 2002, How much training have you delivered since then? Since 2002 I have delivered over 50 Workshops, training in excess of 750 people. I also provide consultancy work and have ongoing connections with a large number of organisations and individuals, supporting them in their use of Makaton.
What are your hours of work? I am available to deliver Workshops during Hampshire schools term time.
How much do you charge? Fees for Workshops depend on a number of different factors. For organisations requiring training at their venues, much will depend on which Workshop is required, how many students there will be and how far I will be travelling. To give you a rough idea - around £35 per hour for tutor time, depending on location, timing and number of learners, in addition to resources. (manuals and pocket books). Travelling expenses are negotiated separately and may be calculated according to the Inland Revenue approved mileage rate. www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/travel.htm
