Level 1 workshop

Who Can Attend?

​

The Makaton Level 1 workshop is an introductory course for parents, carers, support workers and professionals who need to use Makaton at home and in their work and assumes no prior knowledge of Makaton.

What Do I Learn?

​

  • Signing instruction is given for Stages 1, 2, plus some of the Additional Stage of the Makaton Core Vocabulary to help in practical situations.

​

  • How the Makaton Language Programme was developed and how it differs from British Sign Language.

​

  • How and why Makaton symbols were introduced

​

  • An overview of alternative communication systems.

​​

  • The training contains many practical exercises and emphasises establishing basic communication with a child or young person.

Teaching arrangements

​Total teaching time for the Level 1 workshop is 6 hours.

​This may be delivered as:

  • 1 x 6 hour whole day, or

  • 2 modules of 3 hours, or

  • as suits the provider.

​​

The maximum recommended time between modules is four weeks,

however modules are usually taught weekly. Makaton training is designed to be flexible

and can easily be tailored to individual need of a provider.
